PRINTMAKING AT THE LONGBARN Tom X, Della Heywood, Douglass-Truth and Robbert Trice participated in a night of experimental printmaking at the Long Barn--painting right on the screens making large brightly colored monoprints. Because the ink dries quickly, the artists had to move fast, with beautiful, spontaneous results. Visiting printmaker Karen Hellmich dropped in for a dose of inspiration before flying back to her home in Australia. |

In 1992, the group established an unusual studio in
a 200 foot long space known as the LONG BARN nestled amidst a natural
bird sanctuary replete with wildlife. A great blue heron, a snowy white
egret, a flock of wild turkeys, and many deer watch over the enterprises
during the day, with the bull frogs taking over at night. The Long Barn,
which has been compared to La Ruche in Paris where many artists established
their studios and worked closely together in a fertile atmosphere during
the Second World War, has become a bubbling center of activity containing
within itself a serigraphy studio, a ceramics studio, a glass-blowing
studio, a wood-working studio, a sculpture and mold-making studio, a small
foundry, and a papermaking studio. Members of the Grass Valley Graphics
Group converge on this idyllic space for some of their most creative work.
The peaceful aura of the setting translates into works that possess a
magical quality.
