The image of the goddess in human, animal or combined
form is prevalent in Egyptian mythology. The Mother Goddess, ISIS,
symbolized fertility and rebirth. When she appeared in the winged
form, her powers of regeneration were unsurpassed. An ancient Egyptian
ruler's most important names were surrounded by the cartouche to form
a royal nameplate or seal. The basic shape and rope design symbolizes
all that the sun encircled, alluding to the Pharaoh's power in the
universe. Many, many cartouches are found in the ruins and artifacts
of ancient Egypt.
