Visiting Bashoo, a/k/a David Christie, in his studio is like entering into a different world.
Whimsical creatures, giant mobiles, colored pieces of metal in all imaginable shapes
hanging from the ceiling, the smell of welded iron in the air, make up the work of
Bashoo as he is seen in his studio, in intense struggle with some hardy piece of wire.
After Calder had gone into the extra-large mobiles like the one in the TWA terminal at JFK airport, there was no successor willing and able to carry on with this particular line of sculpture and create those small masterpieces of three-dimensional abstract composition and balance which now are among some of the most sought-after rarities of modern art.
Since then, Bashoo has emancipated his own style, building upon Calders
tradition. Bashoo, who in his sparetime is a software-designer -- he's an
MIT artificial intelligence graduate -- is very serious about his art. He currently is
totally committed to the exploration of colored shapes in space on an experimental basis.
He analyzes the process of working the metal into its form in a very thorough way, almost
like an alchemist.
Hammering a piece of metal for him is adding noise, fractalization. He tries to minimize this noise leaving certain aesthetic questions unsolved. Bashoo is also a musician, playing drums with the Black Valley Group and digeredoo and cornet with the Thieves Market Band. |
