1. One or more Strathmore Black Art Paper pads which are described as: "Deep black sheets of heavyweight 76 lb. paper provide an ideal background for opaque media. Great for use with pastels, block prints, gel pens, scrapbooking, origami, and more.

Pad is 35 sheets of 12 in. x 12 in. 76 lb. paper, pH Neutral."

It can cost anywhere from $6.00 - $9.00. (Or any black art paper will do if you can't find the Strathmore).

2. NuPastels. You can get a whole set -- they come in different sizes -- or just choose a few colors you would like to work with.
